SOEN – Imperial (Silver Lining Music)

Είναι κάποιες χροιές ρε παιδί μου, που σου αναμοχλεύουν το μέσα σου και σου το κάνουν shaken not stirred… Τι κι αν έχουν κλέψει λίγο από Disturbed τι κι αν δεν ανακαλύπτουν τον τροχό, σε καθηλώνουν και σε «υποχρεώνουν» να τους ακούσεις.

Κάτι τέτοιο έγινε και μόλις έβαλα να ακούσω το καινούριο δισκογραφικό βήμα των SOEN που είχαμε την τύχη να παρακολουθήσουμε στη χώρα μας λίγο πριν μας πάρει και μας σηκώσει συναυλιακά και όχι μόνο ο COVID. Τίτλος αυτού Imperial και κυκλοφόρησε 29 Ιανουαρίου 2021 από τη Silver Lining Music. Την παραγωγή επιμελήθηκε ο Iñaki Marconi και οι ίδιοι οι SOEN, ενώ την μίξη και το mastering, έκανε ο Kane Churko, (Ozzy Osbourne, Bob Dylan). Ομολογώ ότι η παραγωγή θα μπορούσε να είναι αρκετά πιο γεμάτη, ωστόσο ενδέχεται να είναι μια συνειδητή επιλογή της μπάντας αυτή από καλλιτεχνική άποψη.

Γεγονός είναι ότι πρόκειται για μια ορεξάτη παρέα με φρέσκια οπτική πάνω στο πως πρέπει να ακούγεται το prog το 2021 και έχουν φτιάξει ένα δικό τους ήχο που στάζει μελαγχολία, φτιάχνει ατμόσφαιρα ενώ έχει το νεύρο και τον παλμό να σε κρατάει σε εγρήγορση. Δεν γίνεται να μην σε πάρει με το μέρος της η βελούδινη μελωδία μέσα στο Antagonist ούτε να μη σου κολλήσει το ρεφραίν στο κεφάλι. Κι αυτή η χροιά του Joel Ekelöf με τις ιδέες που βάζει στις μελωδίες πραγματικά στοιχειωτικές.

Θεωρώ ότι συγκροτήματα σαν τους SOEN , A Perfect Circle, Tool, Pain Of Salvation, Katatonia, Leprous είναι αυτά που μπορούν να αποτελέσουν το κοινό έδαφος που μπορεί να βρεθεί ανάμεσα στους απανταχού μουσικόφιλους. Δεν είναι τυχαίο που ενώνουν ετερόκλητους ακροατές και πραγματώνουν αυτό που για εμένα προσωπικά είναι το πιο πολύτιμο χαρακτηριστικό της μουσικής γενικότερα, την επικοινωνία. Η μουσική είναι η γλώσσα που συνδέεσαι με ένα άγνωστο και βρίσκεις κοινό έδαφος, επικοινωνείς. Ειδικότερα όμως οι SOEN, αφού γράφουμε για το Imperial, είναι μουσική για ανοιχτά αυτιά και ακροατές χωρίς στεγανά. Είναι το άλμπουμ που θα βάλω στους μη μεταλλάδες φίλους μου και θα τους αρέσει. Οπότε αν θέλεις κουπλέ ρεφραίν, σόλο, ρεφραίν τέλος μην μπεις στον κόπο. Είναι ένα άλμπουμ που θα φέρει πολλούς οπαδούς στο metal. Αν πάλι απολαμβάνεις τις μελωδίες, την ατμόσφαιρα και τις χροιές που έχουν να σου προσφέρουν συναίσθημα και ερμηνεία… πάτα Play.

ENGLISH VERSION

It’s that color in the voice… the kind that stirs your insides and make it… shaken not stirred… Who cares if they kind of have stepped on the riffs of Disturbed and they don’t exactly invent the wheel, they can draw you in and make you listen close.

That’s exactly the case with what happened when I pressed play to listen to the new SOEN who were one of the last bands to play live in Greece before Covid stroke. The album is entitled Imperial and it was released on January 29^th on Silver Lining Music. Production duties were handled by Iñaki Marconi and the band itself, while mix and mastering duties were handled by Kane Churko, (Ozzy Osbourne, Bob Dylan). I have to admit that the production is the weak part of the album, however I can’t say whether it’s a matter of choice of the band.

SOEN are a hungry gang with a fresh view over how prog should be played in 2021. They have created their own trademark sound that drips melancholy, creates a velvety mood while holding on to the necessary edge to keep you alert. It’s impossible to resist the velvet melody in Antagonist and the chorus is a total earworm. And that voice of Joel Ekelöf with the ideas in the melodies are absolutely haunting.

I feel that bands such as SOEN , A Perfect Circle, Tool, Pain Of Salvation, Katatonia, Leprous are those that can become the common ground for every music fan whatever genre they are coming from. It’s no wonder that it connects diverse listeners who are living breathing proof for what I personally feel is the priceless feature of music, communication. Music is the language you connect with a stranger, you find common ground, you communicate. Especially for SOEN though, since we are reviewing Imperial, it’s music for ears wide open and listeners without barriers. It’s the album I’ll play for my nonmetal friends and they’ll enjoy it. So if you like your music, verse, chorus, solo, chorus the end don’t bother. Because it’s an album that will bring new listeners into metal. If you like your metal with melodies, atmosphere and voices that can indulge you with feeling and amazing performances… press Play.
