Όταν ζεις στην Ελλάδα και το είδος μουσικής που προτιμάς να ακούς είναι το metal είσαι, θέλεις δεν θέλεις, μειοψηφία. Πράγμα το οποίο σημαίνει ότι δεν σε υπολογίζουν οι δισκογραφικές των αγαπημένων σου συγκροτημάτων σαν αξιόλογη αγορά, δεν σε υπολογίζουν ως ένα ικανό κοινό να υποστηρίξει συναυλίες τα agencies που διοργανώνουν τις περιοδείες των συγκροτημάτων και γενικά σε έχουν «γραμμένο» και απλά αρκείσαι στα ψίχουλα που σου πετάνε οι μεγάλοι διοργανωτές συναυλιών που σπάνια είναι συγκροτήματα από το παρών της σκηνής και κυρίως είναι μεγαθήρια της δεκαετίας του 80.
Αφού λοιπόν σου αρέσει αυτή η μουσική και ένα σημαντικό μέρος της είναι οι συναυλίες, το καλύτερο που έχεις να κάνεις είναι να πας σε ένα Ευρωπαϊκό φεστιβάλ, και αυτό είναι αρκετό για να καταλάβεις ότι για το είδος μουσικής που ακούς, ζεις σε λάθος χώρα. Αυτός ήταν ο κυριότερος λόγος που φέτος πήγα στην Τσεχία, στο Brutal Assault Festival.
Το Brutal Assault είναι συγκριτικά με τα υπόλοιπα Ευρωπαϊκά φεστιβάλ ένας οικονομικός προορισμός, οι 4 μέρες του φεστιβάλ με τα περίπου 150 συγκροτήματα κοστίζουν 180 ευρώ, περίπυο. Τα 500ml Τσέχικης μπύρας μέσα στο φεστιβάλ κοστίζουν περίπου 3 ευρώ και μπορείς να βρεις ένα ξενοδοχείο περίπου στα 300€. Γιατί τα γράφω όλα αυτά; Γιατί μετά από αυτό που έζησα αυτές τις μέρες στην Τσεχία αναρωτιέμαι γιατί κανένας διοργανωτής στην Ελλάδα δεν έχει μπει στον κόπο να επισκεφθεί ένα για να αντιληφθεί πως ένα φεστιβάλ, γίνεται ένα θεματικό πάρκο, με παράλληλα δρώμενα, φαγητό, δραστηριότητες για παιδιά και μια ολοκληρωμένη εμπειρία που μόλις την βιώσεις μετράς τις μέρες ανάποδα για την επόμενη χρονιά.
Φτάσαμε το βράδυ της Τρίτης. Στο ξενοδοχείο μας περίμεναν άνθρωποι του φεστιβάλ για να μας δώσουν το «βραχιολάκι» που φορτίζεις από πριν με χρήματα ώστε να πληρώνεις για τα πάντα μέσα στο φεστιβάλ. Όταν λέμε τα πάντα εννοούμε, μπύρα, φαγητό, merch, vip τουαλέτες, ή κάποιο δρώμενο. Το εισιτήριο σου συνδέεται με την εφαρμογή του φεστιβάλ που έχεις στο κινητό σου μέσα από την οποία σημειώνεις τα συγκροτήματα που θέλεις να παρακολουθήσεις και σου στέλνει ειδοποίηση την ώρα που ξεκινάει κάθε συγκρότημα, πότε είναι διαθέσιμο το merch της κάθε μπάντας, κλείνεις θέση στο πούλμαν που σε μεταφέρει στο χώρο του φεστιβάλ, έχεις ενημέρωση για τις χρεώσεις και το υπόλοιπο που έχεις στο «βραχιολάκι» σου αλλά και βαθμολογείς τις μπάντες που παρακολούθησες. Μετά την ολοκλήρωση του φεστιβάλ μπορείς να δώσεις μια συνολική αξιολόγηση της εμπειρίας σου και να προτείνεις τα συγκροτήματα που θέλεις να δεις την επόμενη χρονιά.
Την Τετάρτη νωρίς το πρωί φτάσαμε στο χώρο του φεστιβάλ που ήδη είχε αρκετό κόσμο, γιατί μη ξεχνιόμαστε υπάρχει και μεγάλος κατασκηνωτικός χώρος για όποιον θέλει να ζήσει την ολοκληρωμένη φεστιβαλική εμπειρία. Πρόκειται για ένα τεράστιο πολεμικό φρούριο του 18ου αιώνα που σίγουρα προσθέτει στην ατμόσφαιρα της μουσικής, μέσα στο πράσινο. Φυσικά και στηθήκαμε μια ώρα για να αγοράσουμε merch όχι όμως από τις μπάντες αλλά από το φεστιβάλ και αυτό είναι μια από τις επιτυχίες του, ότι θέλεις ένα αναμνηστικό ότι έζησες το Brutal Assault. Ήδη είχαν ξεκινήσει τα συγκροτήματα να παίζουν στη σκηνή αλλά δεν είχαμε βάλει κάτι στη λίστα μας από τόσο νωρίς. Μπήκαμε σε σκοτεινές κρύπτες και ήπιαμε μπύρα, λιώσαμε στο περπάτημα για να δούμε όλες τις γωνιές, από το εργαστήρι που φτιάχνεις το δικό σου δερμάτινο βραχιόλι, στην γωνιά μιας ομάδας Mad Max (δείτε το βίντεο), στο Pit Of Doom που δεν είναι για λιγόψυχους, στο μπαρ με τα κοκτέιλ και τα darkwaveοgothιάρικα live και clinics.
Την πρώτη μέρα το ρολόι μέτρησε περίπου 12,000 βήματα. Είδαμε ένα σφηνάκι από SYLOSIS, οι οποίοι είναι πολύ καλοί αλλά ο καυτός ήλιος δεν βοήθησε. Οι BLACK DAHLIA MURDER δεν μας ενθουσίασαν αλλά παρόλα αυτά είδαμε όλο τους το σετ. Επόμενη στάση SPIRITBOX οι οποίοι μουσικά ήταν εξαιρετικοί αλλά δυστυχώς για αυτούς εκείνη την ώρα έφτασε ο «αχόρταγος» που άδειαζε τις χημικές τουαλέτες δίπλα ακριβώς στη σκηνή με αποτέλεσμα η Courtney να κάνει κάποια ειρωνικά σχόλια που την έκαναν να φανεί σνόμπ, τουλάχιστον έτσι όπως το αξιολόγησα εγώ και κάποιοι από την παρέα. Σίγουρα κανείς δεν απολαμβάνει τη μυρωδιά αλλά τα σχόλια για το μέγεθος του φεστιβάλ στο οποίο παίζεις μάλλον περιττεύουν. Για τη συνέχεια είδαμε VLTIMAS οι οποίοι έπαιζαν στην 3η σκηνή του φεστιβάλ Obscure και ήταν εκπληκτικοί. Απολαύσαμε στη Sea Sheperd DEICIDE οι οποίο έπαιξαν για δεύτερη συνεχόμενη χρονιά κατόπιν απαίτησης του κόσμου, ΝΑΙ ήταν τόσο καλοί, κάναμε ένα πέρασμα από την 4η μικρή σκηνή Octagon για να δούμε τους DISCORD αλλά ο ήχος ήταν τραγικός και προτιμήσαμε να επανέλθουμε στην Obscure για να παρακολουθήσουμε τους μαγευτικούς BRUTUS.
Για τη συνέχεια ανεβήκαμε στο natural stand, ένα υπερυψωμένο λόφο που έχει δικό του μπαρ, παγκάκια για να καθίσεις ή απλά κάθεσαι στο γρασίδι και έχεις οπτική επαφή και με τις δυο μεγάλες σκηνές. Στην Marshall οι EXODUS οι οποίοι έλιωσαν το κοινό στα mosh pit. Στην δίπλα σκηνή ετοιμάζονταν οι MOTIONLESS IN WHITE. Να αναφέρω εδώ ότι αυτό είναι ένα από τα τρωτά σημεία του φεστιβάλ. Όσο παίζει μια μπάντα στην Marshall Stage, κάνει soundcheck η επόμενη στην Sea Sheperd και ανάποδα, και συχνά αυτό είναι ενοχλητικό. Ειδικά για τους μουσικούς.
Είδαμε και τους MOTIONLESS IN WHITE από ψηλά με τα pyro του φεστιβάλ περιμετρικά στο τείχος του φρούριου να δημιουργούν μια ονειρική ατμόσφαιρά αλλά έσκασαν κάποιες ψιχάλες και επειδή η πρόβλεψη μιλούσε για βροχή προτιμήσαμε να κατέβουμε σε ένα από τα μπαρ προκειμένου να προστατευτούμε. Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που χάσαμε τον ABBATH να παίζει IMMORTAL. Η βροχή σταμάτησε και εμείς πήγαμε να ακούσουμε DARK TRANQUILLITY. Για όποιον αγαπά το συγκρότημα, απογοητευτική εμφάνιση. Το setlist, η απόδοση της μπάντας… μας έκανε να σκεφτόμαστε ότι έπρεπε να είχαμε φύγει νωρίτερα για να μπορέσουμε να πάμε το επόμενο πρωί να δούμε NECROT. Αλλά τι να κάνουμε αδυναμίες είναι αυτές ρε Μιχαλάκη….
Η πρόβλεψη του καιρού μιλούσε για βροχές και σήμερα και πήγαμε εξοπλισμένοι. Ευτυχώς ήταν απλά ένα ψιχάλισμα, που για να είμαι ειλικρινής το προτιμάς από τον καυτό ήλιο. Προσπαθήσαμε να δούμε OBSCURA, και αυτοί προσπάθησαν να παίξουν αλλά κάποιο λάθος στην καλωδίωση ήταν η αιτία να παίξουν 3 μόλις τραγούδια. Απογοήτευση. Βόλτα στα μαγαζιά του φεστιβάλ με αναμνηστικά,merch, φαγητό, μπύρες, μέχρι και tattoo μπορείς να κάνεις, και επιστροφή για INCANTATION. Old school death metal στα καλύτερά του.
Επόμενοι στη διπλανή σκηνή WHITECHAPEL. Παρόλο που είναι ένα από τα συγκροτήματα που ήθελα να παρακολουθήσω με ενθουσιασμό τελικά το live τους ήταν κάπως κουραστικό και δεν έφταιγε ούτε το ψιλόβροχο, ούτε η ορθοστασία.
Αφήσαμε πολλά από τα ενδιάμεσα για να κάνουμε βόλτες, να φάμε, να δούμε τις γωνίες του κάστρου, να ξεκουράσουμε λίγο τα πόδια μας, είμαστε στα περίπου 13.000 βήματα και τελικά στηθήκαμε κοντά στη σκηνή για CARCASS. Εγγύηση! Ο ήχος, το attitude, το setlist; Από τις αγαπημένες μου εμφανίσεις σε όλο το φεστιβάλ, ήταν και η πρώτη φορά που τους έβλεπα και ομολογώ έβαλαν τον πήχη ψηλά. Επόμενοι TESTAMENT και έχοντας ήδη την εμπειρία της Αθήνας στο Release ξέραμε ότι θα ήταν εξαιρετικοί και φυσικά ήταν!
Για να είμαι ειλικρινής πήγαμε και για ένα ανεφοδιασμό σε μπύρες και ανεβήκαμε στο natural stand από όπου παρακολουθήσαμε ένα από τα πιο επικά συγκροτήματα του Brutal Assault 2025, SATYRICON. Εξαιρετικοί! Μισή ώρα μετά τα μεσάνυχτα τελειώνουν και εμείς παίρνουμε το δρόμο για την Obscure για τους UADA. Το καλύτερο live του φεστιβάλ! Και το γράφω γιατί έρχονται και Αθήνα, μην το χάσετε είναι εξαιρετικοί! Με ένα καπνό να πνίγει τη σκηνή και οι ίδιοι σαν σκιές χαμένοι μέσα σε αυτόν να παίζουν σα να είναι ηχογράφηση. Σίγουρα η νούμερο 1 εμφάνιση για εμένα.
Πρωινό Παρασκευής και η πρώτη μπάντα της ημέρας LIK που είναι σίγουρα μια σημείωση που κράτησα για να ψάξω επιστρέφοντας. Δεύτεροι οι KALMAH. Δεν θα πω ότι ήταν κακοί, μόνο ότι είναι καλύτερο να τους ακούς παρά να τους βλέπεις. Οι IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT που ήθελα να τσεκάρω με απογοήτευσαν και έφυγα για εγγυημένη καφρίλα ABORTED. Ποια καφρίλα δηλαδή, μέχρι και πρόταση γάμου είχαν στο σετ τους.
Επόμενη απογοήτευση του φεστιβάλ οι CYNIC. Απαράδεκτα φωνητικά και πάλι προβλήματα με τον ήχο. Δεν τις ήθελε τις τεχνικές μπάντες. Εξαιρετικοί ήταν οι LEFT TO DIE που μάλιστα μας έκαναν να χαμογελάσουμε που χρησιμοποιούν το I Love The Dead του Alice Cooper για να βγουν στη σκηνή. Περιμέναμε με πολύ ανυπομονησία ένα ειδικό event που είχε οργανώσει το φεστιβάλ, οι Τσέχοι CULT OF FIRE μαζί με συμφωνική ορχήστρα BOHEMIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA θα παρουσίαζαν ένα μουσικό σύνολο προς τιμήν του Bedřich Smetana.
Οι προθέσεις καλές, οι προσδοκίες μας ψηλές αλλά τελικά το αποτέλεσμα κουραστικό και κακό ηχητικά. Τι κάναμε; Πήγαμε στην Obscure για CEPHALIC CARNAGE. Επόμενη στάση ARCHITECTS στην Sea Sheperd. Πολύ light θα μου πεις για Brutal Assault αλλά το κοινό είχε άλλη άποψη. Με την εμφάνιση τους, το άρτια προσεγμένο show με τις οθόνες πίσω τους είναι σίγουρα στην κορυφή της σκηνής γιατί τους αξίζει. Σέβονται το κοινό τους, δεν βγάζουν καθόλου έπαρση και παρουσιάζονται άψογοι στη σκηνή.
Επιστροφή τώρα στην Obscure για KAMPFAR. Πολύ καλοί μουσικά αλλά λίγο το «Come On Brutal Assault», μου έφερε στο μυαλό το «πάμε Αθήνα» (όποιος κατάλαβε, κατάλαβε). Βγαίνοντας από το φεστιβάλ για επιστροφή στο ξενοδοχείο έπαιζαν οι DEATHSTARS οι οποίοι ακούγονταν πολύ καλοί, αλλά οι δυνάμεις μας είχαν αρχίσει να μας εγκαταλείπουν.
Σάββατο, τελευταία μέρα και την αρχή κάνουν οι CYTOTOXIN με το nuclear death metal τους. Μας είχαν πει και οι ABORTED εχθές να δώσουμε προσοχή και δεν είχαν άδικο. Παρόλο που ο ήλιος κατάκαιγε από τα πιο ζωηρά moshpit του φεστιβάλ ήταν αυτό μπροστά τους νωρίς το πρωί. Επόμενοι οι SINISTER που προσέφεραν ακριβώς αυτό που περίμενες από αυτούς και επόμενοι οι KRONOS από τη Γαλλία με ένα death metal που δεν περνάει απαρατήρητο. Και η επόμενη στάση είναι στη Γαλλία με τους GOROD. Ψάξτε τους, είναι από τις καλύτερες ανακαλύψεις του φεστιβάλ. Λυτρωτική στιγμή όταν ήρθε το πυροσβεστικό όχημα και κατάβρεξε το κοινό. Ναι είναι κάτι που έκαναν 2 με 3 φορές τη μέρα όταν πίκαρε η θερμοκρασία. Έχοντας δει PESTILENCE στο Release και παρόλο που ήταν εξαιρετική είναι λίγα τα κενά σήμερα και πάμε γρήγορα να τσιμπήσουμε κάτι γιατί έρχονται οι SADUS. Οι οποίοι μπορεί να είναι πλέον χωρίς τον DiGiorgio αλλά δεν παύουν να είναι εγγύηση. Μην γελιόμαστε πλέον σέρνουμε τα κουφάρια μας μετά από 3 τόσο γεμάτες μέρες και νύχτες. Ψάχνοντας κάπου να ξαποστάσουμε, λίγος ύπνος πολύ περπάτημα βλέπεις, βρίσκουμε διάφορα από τα σημεία που έχει το φεστιβάλ για να ξεκουραστείς. Πάνω σε ένα από αυτά, ένα σημείο των τειχών, έχει στημένη μια οθόνη και δικό του PA και παρακολουθούμε PRIMORDIAL, εγγυημένη απόδοση και μια δροσερή ανάσα πάνω στα καψαλισμένα μας αυτιά.
Επόμενοι, EMPEROR! Ευγενικοί (ναι τους είδα πρώτη φορά δεν ξεστόμισε ούτε μια βρισιά ο άνθρωπος) και καλοκουρδισμένοι μπροστά σχεδόν σε ολόκληρο το κοινό του φεστιβάλ αποδίδουν άψογα και κακά τα ψέματα, με το φρούριο και τις φωτιές είναι στο ιδανικό σκηνικό. Λίγο πριν το τέλος πάμε πάλι προς την Obscure για DØDHEIMSGARD. Ποτέ δεν καταλάβαμε, τι ήταν αυτό που ψεκαζόταν και τι ήταν αυτό που πετούσε στον κόσμο ο Vicotnik , ποιο ήταν το παλικάρι που ανέβηκε και τραγούδησε αλλά σίγουρα ένα από τα καλύτερα live του φεστιβάλ. Τέλος με τους εμβληματικούς BEHEMOTH! Όλο το φεστιβάλ μπροστά στη σκηνή και μέχρι πίσω στα μπαρ. Το ύψωμα του natural stand γεμάτο. Δεν είδα περισσότερο κόσμο στο φεστιβάλ συγκεντρωμένο για μια μπάντα και ίσως αυτό να λέει πολλά για τη χώρα μας. Όσοι ήσασταν στη συναυλία τους στο Release καταλαβαίνετε. Ο Nergal απέδωσε πολύ περισσότερο φωνητικά, ο ήχος εξωπραγματικά καλός, pyro πάνω στη σκηνή που δεν είδαμε στη χώρα μας και μια εμφάνιση ηγετική για την μπάντα. Οι BEHEMOTH στην καλύτερη στιγμή της καριέρας τους να αποδεικνύουν ότι τους αξίζει κάθε αναγνώριση που λαμβάνουν. Όταν τελείωσε πήραμε το δρόμο για την έξοδο και βλέποντας το πανό που μας ευχαριστούσε και μας προσκαλούσε στην επόμενη χρονιά με ένα QR code που σου έδινε τη δυνατότητα αγοράς εισιτηρίου σε προνομιακή τιμή, το μόνο που σκεφτόμασταν ήταν 365 μέρες είναι θα επιστρέψουμε!

When you live in Greece and the kind of music you prefer to listen to is metal you are, like it or not, a minority. Which means that the record labels of your favorite bands don’t count you as a worthy market, the agencies that organize the bands’ tours don’t count you as a capable audience to support concerts and in general they ignore you and you just settle for the crumbs thrown to you by the big concert promoters who are rarely bands from the present scene and are mostly 80’s mega bands.
So if you like this music and a major part of it is the concerts, the best you can do is go to a European festival, and that’s enough to realize that for the kind of music you’re listening to, you’re living in the wrong country. That was the main reason why I went to the Czech Republic this year, to the Brutal Assault Festival.
Brutal Assault is an affordable destination compared to other European festivals, the 4 days of the festival with about 150 bands cost 180 euros, all in all. 500ml of Czech beer inside the festival costs about 3 euros and you can get a hotel for about 300€. Why am I writing all this? Because after what I experienced these days in the Czech Republic I wonder why no organizer in Greece has bothered to visit one to realize that a festival, becomes a theme park, with parallel events, food, activities for children and a complete experience that once you experience it you count the days backwards for next year.
We arrived on Tuesday night. There were festival people waiting for us at the hotel to give us the “wristband” that you pre-load with money to pay for everything inside the festival. When we say everything, we mean beer, food, merch, vip toilets, or an event. Your ticket is linked to the festival app you have on your phone through which you note the bands you want to attend and it sends you a notification when each band starts, when each band’s merch is available, you book a seat on the bus that takes you to the festival site, you get updates on fees and the balance you have on your “wristband” and you can rate the bands you attended. After the completion of the festival, you can give an overall evaluation of your experience and suggest the bands you want to see next year.
On Wednesday early in the morning we arrived at the festival site which was already quite crowded, because let’s not forget there is a big camping area for anyone who wants to live the full festival experience. It’s a huge 18th century military fortress that definitely adds to the atmosphere of the music, surrounded by forest. Of course, we stood in que for an hour in order to buy merch not from the bands but from the festival (Tshirts, Beer Cups, Baby clothing, lighters, Cup holders, underwear etc) and that’s one of the successes of the festival, you want a souvenir that you experienced Brutal Assault. The bands had already started playing on stage but we hadn’t put anything on our list that early. We went into dark vaults and drank beer, walked thousands of steps to see all the corners of the castle, from the workshop where you make your own leather bracelet, to the corner of a Mad Max group (check out the video), to the Pit Of Doom which is not for the faint-hearted, to the cocktail bar and darkwaveogothic live shows and clinics.
On the first day the smart watch counted about 12,000 steps. We saw a shot of SYLOSIS, who are very good but the hot sun didn’t help us stick around. BLACK DAHLIA MURDER didn’t wow us but we still saw their whole set. Next stop SPIRITBOX who musically were excellent but unfortunately for them at that time the truck that empties the chemical toilets arrived, right next to the stage and as a result Courtney made some ironic comments that made her look like a snob, at least the way I and some of my friends judged it. Certainly no one enjoys the smell but comments about the size of the festival you’re playing at are probably unnecessary. For the follow up we saw VLTIMAS who were playing on stage 3 of the festival, Obscure and they were amazing. We enjoyed at Sea Sheperd DEICIDE who played for the second year in a row by popular demand, YES they were that good, we made a pass by the 4th small Octagon stage to see DISCORD but the sound was tragic and we opted to return to Obscure to watch the magnificent BRUTUS. For the rest of the show, we went up to the natural stand, an elevated hill that has its own bar, benches to sit on or just sit on the grass and have a view of both big stages.
In Marshall stage, EXODUS melted the audience in the mosh pit. On the next stage MOTIONLESS IN WHITE were getting ready. I should mention here that this is one of the vulnerabilities of the festival. While one band is playing on the Marshall Stage, the next is sound checking on the Sea Sheperd and vice versa, and often this is annoying. Especially for the musicians. We also saw MOTIONLESS IN WHITE from above with the festival pyros around the perimeter of the fortress wall creating a dreamy atmosphere, but there were some sprinkles and because the forecast was calling for rain, we opted to go down to one of the bars in order to protect ourselves. This is the reason why we missed ABBATH playing IMMORTAL. The rain stopped and we went to listen to DARK TRANQUILLITY. For anyone who loves the band, a disappointing performance. The setlist, the band’s performance… made us think we should have left earlier so we could have gone to see NECROT the next morning. But what can we do about weaknesses, Mikael….
The weather forecast was calling for rain today and we went equipped. Luckily it was just a drizzle, which to be honest you prefer to the hot sun. We tried to see OBSCURA, and they tried to play but some wiring error was the cause of them only playing 3 songs. Disappointment. Stroll around the festival shops with souvenirs, merch, food, beer, even tattoos and back to INCANTATION. Old school death metal at its best. Next up on the next stage WHITECHAPEL. Despite being one of the bands I wanted to watch with excitement, in the end, their live performance was a bit tiring and it wasn’t the drizzle or the standing up that was to blame.
We left a lot of the in-between to walk around, eat, see the corners of the castle, rest our feet a bit, we were at about 13,000 steps and finally stood near the stage for CARCASS. Guarantee! The sound, the attitude, the setlist? One of my favorite performances of the whole festival, it was also my first time seeing them and I must admit they set the bar high. Next up TESTAMENT and having already experienced Athens at Release Festival we knew they would be great and of course they were!
To be honest we also went for a beer refill and went up to the natural stand where we watched one of the most epic bands of Brutal Assault 2025, SATYRICON. Amazing! Half an hour after midnight they finish and we made our way to Obscure for UADA. The best live of the festival! And I’m writing this because they’re coming to Athens too, don’t miss it they’re excellent! With smoke choking the stage and they themselves like shadows lost in it playing like a recording. Definitely the number 1 show for me.
Friday morning and the first band of the day LIK which is definitely a note I kept to look out for on my return. Second was KALMAH, I won’t say they were bad, just that they’re better to listen to than to watch. IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT who I wanted to check out disappointed me and I left for guaranteed brutality by ABORTED. Which is what kind of oxymorons, as they even had a romantic wedding proposal in their set. Next, a disappointment of the festival, CYNIC. Unacceptable vocals and again problems with the sound. Something went terribly wrong with technical bands. LEFT TO DIE were excellent and even made us smile using Alice Cooper’s I Love The Dead to come on stage. We were very much looking forward to a special event organized by the festival, the Czechs CULT OF FIRE together with symphony orchestra BOHEMIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA would present a musical ensemble in honor of Bedřich Smetana. Their intentions were good, our expectations high but in the end the result was not as exciting as expected and poor sounding. What did we do?
We went to Obscure for CEPHALIC CARNAGE. Next stop ARCHITECTS at Sea Sheperd. Very “light” you might say for Brutal Assault but the audience had a different opinion. With their performance, their well thought out show with the screens behind them they are definitely on top of their genre because they deserve it. They respect their audience, don’t appear to be snobbish and present themselves flawlessly on stage. Back now to Obscure for KAMPFAR. Very good musically but the constant “Come On Brutal Assault” brought to mind “let’s go to Athens” (whoever understood, understood). Leaving the festival to return to the hotel DEATHSTARS were playing who sounded very good but our strength was starting to leave us.
Saturday, last day and the beginning is CYTOTOXIN with their nuclear death metal. ABORTED told us yesterday to pay attention and they were not wrong. Even though the sun was burning down they formed one of the most ferocious mosh pits of the festival early in the morning. Next up was SINISTER who offered exactly what you’d expect from them and next up was KRONOS from France with a death metal sound that doesn’t go unnoticed. And the next stop were French, GOROD. Look for them, they are one of the best discoveries of the festival. Redeeming moment when the fire truck came and showered the crowd. Yes, it’s something they did 2 or 3 times a day when the temperature was picking up. Having seen PESTILENCE in Release Athens and although they were excellent, there are very few gaps today and we had to get a quick bite to eat because SADUS were coming. Who may now be without DiGiorgio but they are still a guaranteed live band. Make no mistake, by Saturday we are dragging our carcasses, after 3 such full days and nights. Looking for somewhere to rest, little sleep a lot of walking you see, we find several of the festival’s spots to rest.
On one of them, a spot on the walls, which had a screen and its own PA set up and we watch PRIMORDIAL, guaranteed performance and a cool breath on our burnt ears. Next up, EMPEROR! Polite (yes I saw them for the first time not a single curse word was uttered by the man) and well-tuned in front of almost the entire festival audience they perform flawlessly and to say the least, with the fortress and fires around them, they are in the perfect setting. Just before the end we head back to Obscure for DØDHEIMSGARD. We never really understood what it was that Vicotnik was spraying on himself and what it was that Vicotnik was throwing at the crowd, who was the lad who got up and sang but definitely one of the best shows of the festival.
Finally with the iconic BEHEMOTH! The whole festival in front of the stage and all the way back to the bars. The mound of the natural stand full. I didn’t see more people at the festival gathered for one band and maybe that says a lot about our country. Those of you who were at their show in Athens understand. Nergal delivered much passionate and brutal vocals, the sound was unreal, pyro on stage that we didn’t see in our country and a leading performance for the band. BEHEMOTH at the best moment of their career to prove that they deserve every recognition they receive. When it was over we made our way to the exit and seeing the banner thanking us and inviting us to next year’s show with a QR code that gave you the opportunity to buy a ticket at a discount price, all we could think was 365 days and we’ll be back!
